The Amazon Effect

We have been working on our website for some time to accommodate the “Amazon Effect.” In short, the Amazon Effect is the pattern we have all experienced when we want to order an item on the Internet, pay for it, and have it delivered WITHOUT talking to a single, living human.

The Amazon Effect works for many items, but custom wallpaper is a challenge. We are still working on it, however, and one day, we hope to have it on our website for our nautical chart wallpaper as well.

As you can imagine, for custom nautical chart wallpaper, that is quite difficult to do.

Without talking to us, how can you pick out a chart, pay for it, and make sure that the chart will fit in the room and not have an important area cut out when a window, door, mirror, or sconce is a factor?

Most of the time, a good wallpaper mural is the result of a process started by our clients. Let’s look at a great example of how this works.

Michael Tobias, a Long Islander, contacted us with an idea. He had two charts that he somehow wanted to be a single image and then displayed on his wall in a nautical chart wallpaper mural.

Michael emailed the picture shown above of his wall with two charts taped on it.

Michael is a sailor who lives in Rye, New York and because his corner of Long Island Sound is his center of the world, he naturally wanted a mural of that area on his wall.

So his first question was: How could he have this area in one mural when there is not a single chart to enlarge into a wallpaper mural?

Answer: Although it wasn’t easy, we graphically “stitched” three detailed charts together and created a mural specially designed for his wall. Note that we had to allow for a heater on the lower center of his wall, and that heater could not obscure an important area of the chart.

Once the stitching was finished, we created a mock-up of his wall (see the second picture) with the merged chart areas. Then, by sending images back and forth through email, we finally found the positioning of that image he wanted on his wall.

As you can see in our third picture, it all was worth the effort and conversation!

So how about you? Can we encourage you to take some time to visit with us about your ideas for a mural? We are not salespeople by any stretch of the imagination. We just love to talk about nautical charts and our particular ability to create any idea you have in mind. Try us out. Give us a call — or a text if you are too bashful — we are delighted to visit with you. The number for a call or text is: (801) 989-8083.

Try it out now. We are almost always open for business or a conversation..

"Skipper" Steve Morris has been sailing for more than 45 years. Whenever Skipper's sailor friends used to talk about their sailing adventures, it was not unusual for them to grab a chart, unroll it to a certain island or waterway, and tell a story of what happened during a particular voyage. As Skipper realized that nautical charts are used for navigating stories as well as passageways, the idea of nautical chart murals came naturally. What better place to tell a tale of the sea than in one's own home or office than with a beautiful nautical chart mural as the visual aid!

In 2013, he moved to the Coeur d'Alene area of Northern Idaho with his wife Linda. When Skipper is not working on murals, you can find him sailing his Erickson 27' on Lake Coeur d’Alene.

He continues to design custom-made wallpaper from nautical charts, satellite photos, topographical maps and favorite photos.
